The 3 p.m. game of day two of the Cal Ripken Major 70 World Series featured the North Dakota State Champions and the Ohio Valley Regional Champions.
North Dakota looked like they were going to take an early lead in the top of the first when a hit combined with some walks loaded the bases with one out. Ohio Valley’s starting pitcher, Bennett Eagen, realized the gravity of the situation and retired the next two batters on strikeouts to retire the side.
Moving to the bottom of the first, Eagen once again came in big time for his team. Ripping a hard it ball to the outfield, Eagen scored the first run of the game with an RBI double. With the score 0-1, North Dakota manages to get out of it with only one run.
A strong pitching match in the second left both teams scoreless heading into the third.
In the top of the third North Dakota finally gets on the board with an RBI from Landyn Almy. Ohio Valley only allowed one that inning as the prepared to add retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning. After some shaky pitching from North Dakota, Eagen was able to score from third on a balk. After retaking the lead and making the score 2-1, Ohio Valley was unable to put anymore runs on the board and settled for a small lead going into the fourth.
North Dakota failed to even the score in the top half of the inning, and Ohio Valley took advantage of that to add some insurance. Kyle Campbell stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and hits a well placed ball to the outfield for an RBI double.
Heading to the top of five, Ohio Valley led with a score of 3-1. North Dakota just could not seem to find a rhythm, and went down without putting anything on the board. Ohio Valley came to bat looking to secure their victory, and that is exactly what they did. Landon Akers cranked a home run off the scoreboard to make it 4-1. The final run of the game for Ohio Valley came once again from Eagen. Being alert on base, he took advantage of a wild pitch and stole home.
Moving to the top of the sixth, this was North Dakota’s last chance. Ohio Valley wanting to recieve the win, focused in and made it a quick final inning.
